The video in this article shows Prof (FAKE) Gurbachan Singh Panwa (also called Gurbachan Singh Thailand) discussing the meaning of the verse “KALJUG MEH KIRTAN PARDHANA.  GURMUKH JAPEAA LAEE THIANA” with our brief comments included as slides within the video.  The video is an extract from a Q and A session held in Malaysia in 2012 (see Figure 1).  See LINK A for the complete video.

Principal Gurbachan Singh Panwa also referred to as Gurbachan Singh Thailand has been invited, together with Sarabjit Singh Dhunda and Sukhwinder Singh to speak at the “Leadership of Guru Granth Sahib Ji Programme” to be held in a number of venues in Malaysia (see the program at the end of this article).

According to Autar Singh the three speakers are the senior staff of Gurmat Gian Missionary College Ludhiana (GGMC Ludhiana)

Gurbachan Singh is the Principal of GGMC.  The other speakers are Sarabjit Dhunda and Sukhwinder Singh, Professor and Vice-Principal respectively.  

The question posed was “In the verse KALJUG MEH KIRTAN PARDHANA .., 

• • what does KALJUG mean and 
• • what is the relationship between humans and the world with KALJUG.

The first response of Gurbachan Singh Panwa that “GURBANI DOES NOT AGREE WITH THE CONCEPT OF JUG” is both surprising and shocking.

Why?

The word JUG (ਜੁਗ, ਜੁਗਿ) occurs about 200 times in the SGGS Ji (note that number excludes words of which JUG is a part e.g SATJUG).  In more than 90% of these the reference is to AGE or AGES.  The remaining 10% refers to the world with the exception of a few.  

Without doubt the concept of JUG i.e. age (which is also the concept in Sanatan Mat) is NOT rejected in Gurbani.  Further Gurbani also refers to SATJUG, TRETAJUG, DWAPURJUG AND KALJUG.

Mahan Kosh gives the verse contextual meaning of JUG as “the period of time referred to as SAT JUG, TRETA JUG, DWAPUR JUG and KAL JUG periods of time”.  Note that these are very long periods of time, running into millions of our years.  The Merriam Webster gives the contextual meaning of age as “an indefinite or relatively long time in human affairs”.

So we can conclude that Gurbachan Panwa is misleading the Sangat by stating that Gurbani does not agree with the concept of JUG.

The question then is DOES GURBACHAN PANWA really UNDERSTAND GURBANI!  What can he teach to one who wants to learn Gurbani?  It appears that he would most likely be misleading the learner.

Most of the video shows Gurbachan Panwa ranting about irrelevant matters and generating codswallop as far as the verse is concerned.  Some of them are

• numerous grandmother tales related to “pind”
• KALJUG is when brothers and their wives fight
• speaking politely is KIRTAN
• “bagging” kirtanias
• claims since he does not understand a shabad he does not expect the Kirtanias to understand it and states they mislead the Sangat
• because of the practice of Kirtan, Katha as done presently, the population of Sikhs has almost halved
• condemns the practice of Akhand Path linking it to Brahmanical practices
• links the present practice of Kirtan, Akhand Path, Simran to the alcoholism problem.

In the video Gurbachan Panwa explains that SAT JUG means the place where truth prevails and there is presence of SGGS Ji.  Without being explicit, he blames others for confusing the Sangat; most likely this is because the Kathavachak/Kirtania are explaining the meaning of JUG to mean AGE.

Finally he gives the meaning of “KALJUG MEH KIRTAN PARDHANA.  GURMUKH JAPEAA LAEE THIANA to be

If we concentrate (ਧਿਆਨ) on the Godly qualities (ਰਬੀ ਗੁਣ) we will get prominence (ਪਰਧਾਨਾ) and “klha ( ਕਲ੍ਹਾ  = conflict)” will not come to our home.

So in the end, after all the codswallop and ranting he gives the distorted, wrong and misleading interpretation of the verse.

Does not such MISINTERPRETATION AND DISTORTION of Gurbani SOUND FAMILIAR? See Gurvicahar e.g. LINK B and LINK C and many more (search for keywords misleading, distortion, misinterpretation etc) by his associates distorting Gurbani.

Why the need to distort and misinterpret Gurbani?  

The distortion and misinterpretation is done by these Anti-Sikh elements due to the Kala Afghana/Ragi Darshan Anti-Gurmat Ideology they subscribe to.  See Figure 2 below for this ideology.  Gurbani is distorted to fit into this ideology.  For example, in relation to this article, if the concept of AGES is accepted, then there comes in the question of their “IDEOLOGY OF REJECTION OF THE CONCEPT OF REINCARNATION”.  

So they DISTORT THE MEANING of GURBANI so that it can fit into OUR ONE LIFETIME.

Is such a mediocre level of Gurbani knowledge expected of a COLLEGE PRINCIPAL?  

SANGAT JI, YOU DECIDE.

I wonder, with people of such calibre leading the teaching at Gurmat Colleges, WHAT KIND OF MISLEADING KNOWLEDGE the students would be acquiring.

This is how these Anti-Sikh elements, in the GUISE of SIKHs are DISTORTING Gurbani.

BE AWARE remember the WOLF in the story of “Little Red Riding Hood”.

Now for the actual meaning of the shabad and a response to the question.

The meaning of the Shabad is

Singing the praises/glory of Vaheguru (ਕੀਰਤਨ) in (ਮਹਿ) the KAL age (age ਜੁਗ of darkness ਕਲ) is supreme (ਪਰਧਾਨ).  Gurmukh (ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) utter/meditates (ਜਪੀਐ) with utter contemplation (ਲਾਏ ਧਿਆਨਾ).

Clarifying further, when the Gurmukh is following the singing of Kirtan, he utters the Gurbani verse being recited, this being a form of meditation.

The response to the questions is

KALJUG is the age of darkness.  This age is preceeded by the SATJUG, TRETAJUG AND DWAPURJUG.  The world and hence the humans exist in these ages.
