Shabad Kirtan: “Ari Bai Gobind Naam Mat Bisre” by Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji. Thank you Ji for the soulful kirtan.
by Harnaak Singh
In this part we will continue our investigation with a second shabad from SGGS Ji that shows Gurbani does not reject REBIRTH.
INTRODUCTION
In Part 1we discussed a video clip by Baljeet Rajpura claiming that Gurbani rejects the concept of REBIRTH.
In Part 2 we showed his misleading expositions of Gurbani were attributed to his knowledgebase which was limited by his ideological alignment.
We reviewed scientific research in the area of reincarnation in Part 3.
In part 4 we reviewed one shabad from SGGS Ji and showed that Gurbani supports the concept of reincarnation.
So far Gurbani does not reject rebirth.
In this part we will continue with what Gurbani has to say about the “concept of reincarnation” with the second shabad.
WHAT GURBANI SAYS (continued)
We first recapitulate the generally accepted methodology which shows a claim to be false.
It is normal methodology that to prove a claim FALSE, only ONE CASE is sufficient. This means that to prove Baljeet Rajpura’s claim that “Gurbani rejects REBIRTH”, one case i.e. one verse or shabad which shows this claim is FALSE is sufficient.
Our approach was to analyse and understand two Shabads and then to pick verses throughout the SGGS Ji whereby GuruJi’s teaching supports reincarnation. This will prove beyond doubt that Baljeet Rajpura’s claim that “Gurbani rejects REBIRTH” is FALSE.
The first shabad analysed in the last post shows that Gurbani does not reject rebirth.
Now we analyse the second shabad.
Shabad 2
The second “shabad” we shall analyse is SGGS 88 Line 9 Siree Raag M:1. This is actually Chaka 14 of Sri Raag Ki Vaar M:4. The chakka is by Guru Amardas Ji. In this chakka Guru Ji is talking directly to US.
The word US can refer to
- our internal-self ਅੰਤਹਕਰਣ AND/OR
- our link to the higher All-pervading consciousness AND/OR
- our material body through which activities related to our sense and action organs ਇੰਦਰੀਆਂ operate.
The same meaning applies for the words “WE” or “OUR”.
Chakka 14 has 3 sloks followed by a Paurdi. We are interested in the first slok and the Paurdi.
The related part is shown below. The key verses are in bold underline.
Those who do not serve the True Guru, and who do not contemplate the Word of the Shabad –spiritual wisdom does not enter into their hearts; they are like dead bodies in the world.
They go through the cycle of 8.4 million reincarnations, and they are ruined through death and rebirth. He alone serves the True Guru, whom the Lord Himself inspires to do so.
The Treasure of the Naam is within the True Guru; by His Grace, it is obtained. Those who are truly attuned to the Word of the Guru’s Shabad-their love is forever True.
O Nanak, those who are united with Him shall not be separated again. They merge imperceptibly into God. ||1||
Those who meditate on the True Guru shall not be burnt to ashes. Those who meditate on the True Guru are satisfied and fulfilled.
Those who meditate on the True Guru are not afraid of the Messenger of Death. Those upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy, fall at the Feet of the True Guru.
Here and hereafter, their faces are radiant; they go to the Lord’s Court in robes of honor. ||14||
Meaning of the shabad
We will study the whole chakka first. Then we will look into more detail at the parts related to REBIRTH.
Guru Ji is talking to us. The Paurdi tells us what happens to those who meditate on GOD. They will not be burnt to ashes and not be afraid of death. They will be happy and will be accepted in the court of GOD.
In the first slok Guru Ji tells us what happens to those who do not contemplate on GOD and what happens to those who do so. Those who do not contemplate will not get spiritual wisdom and are like dead bodies. They will be ruined and subject to the reincarnation cycle. On the other hand those who serve GOD value NAAM and are attuned to the shabad. They will merge with GOD.
In the second slok Guru Ji talks about the state of those who are devoted to GOD. They, who know GOD are the true devotees. They are self-realised and restrain the wandering mind, always chanting NAAM. They will be exalted and merge with GOD.
In the third slok Guru Ji outlines the characteristics of those who do not contemplate on GOD. They claim to be devotees but are full of deceit, hypocrisy and slander of others. They are polluted with their own filth and argue with Satsangat. They cleanse themselves outwardly and perform empty rituals. Their preordained destiny will not be erased and they will not get liberation.
So we now see how the shabads clarify the theme in the Paurdi which is LIBERATION and REBIRTH.
We shall explore this understanding using Figure 1. Please read carefully and link the description to the figure.
If our inner-self, through the mind follows the mind’s instincts ਮਨਮਤ then we will be performing actions through our sense and action organs (our material body) which do not benefit our connection to the Higher All-pervading consciousness GOD.
We will be performing these actions for our personal material benefit. These actions are deceit, hypocrisy, slander of others, arguing with Satsangat. Also we will cleanse ourselves outwardly and perform empty rituals, to show others and falsely satisfy our mind, that we are not doing any wrong.
Figure 1: Functional diagram of relationship between, the All-pervading consciousness, ਅੰਤਹਕਰਣ antahkaran and ਇੰਦਰੀਆਂ action and sense organs showing the internal functional blocks in antahkaran
We become polluted with these non-beneficial actions which are referred to as filth in the shabad. This will not help our spiritual wisdom to make the connection to the Higher All-pervading consciousness GOD. This is like our body being dead (being dead is being inactive) as far as spirituality is concerned.
Our material body will have to finish, i.e. die one day, and since we will not merge with GOD, we (our soul which is related to our inner-self) will be subject to rebirth. This process will go on until we get liberation. This process is the reincarnation cycle (ਫੇਰੁ) where we will be subject as Gurbani says to 8.4 million lifeforms (ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ).
On the other hand if we, our mind, follow Guru’s teaching ਗੁਰਮਤ then will be performing Gurmat oriented actions through our sense and action organs to
- meet our basic needs (not our wants which are usually in excess of our needs) AND
- also for the benefit of the creation.
These actions will also help in our devotion to GOD and also help us steady our mind. We will serve GOD with a steady mind by always chanting NAAM. This will make us fearless of death. This NAAM simran will also make our connection to the Higher All-pervading consciousness GOD. In this way we will merge with GOD, meaning attain liberation (ਮੁਕਤੀ).
From the discussion above it is explicitly clear that Gurbani espouses the concept of REBIRTH into many-many lifeforms (ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ) in the cycle of reincarnation (ਫੇਰੁ).
Let us now look into the specific verses in the shabad that are related to REBIRTH.
In the first shabad.
What did we do wrong?
Our inner-self (ਅੰਤਰਿ) does not acquire (ਨ ਆਇਓ) Gurmat knowledge (ਗਿਆਨੁ). This is like (ਹੈ) our material body (ਸੰਸਾਰਿ this word means the creation and our body is part of creation) is dead (ਮਿਰਤਕੁ).
So what happens?
We die (ਮਰਿ) and are reborn (ਜੰਮੈ) wandering fruitlessly (ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ) being subject to (ਪਇਆ) 8.4 million lifeforms (ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਫੇਰੁ).
From the Paurdi.
What did we do right and the result?
Those (ਸੇ) who meditated (ਜਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ) on Satgur GOD (ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ) will not (ਨ) be burnt to (ਕੜਿ) ashes (ਸਵਾਹੀ).
Further what happens?
They (ਤਿਨ) will be respected (ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ) in this world (ਐਥੈ) and the next (ਓਥੈ) which is the court of GOD (ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ) where they will be respectfully received (ਪੈਧੇ ਜਾਹੀ).
Clearly Guru Ji tells us in no uncertain terms, that if we do the right thing we will gain liberation and if we do the wrong things we will undergo REBIRTH and subject to the 8.4 million lifeform REINCARNATION cycle.
One point to consider is what Baljeet Rajpura and his missionary associates say about death and rebirth. They say that the death and rebirth references in Gurbani are to death and rebirth of the soul in this life, not that of the physical body. This is MISLEADING ON A COLOSSAL SCALE and it clearly exposes their LIMITED knowledge in Gurbani.
What does Gurbani say about the soul? (SGGS 1026 Line 9 Maroo M: 1)
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within the body. The Creator Lord is eternal and imperishable. The soul does not die, and it cannot be killed; God creates and watches over all. Through the Word of the Shabad, His Will is manifest. ||13||
I rest my case.
These MOORAKHS FOOLS are misleading the SANGAT ALL OVER THE WORLD. Yesterday in Malaysia, today in New Zealand and tomorrow in USA etc.
Wake up SANGAT JI.
Don’t let these MOORAKHS FOOLS wreck the Sikhi TENETS and PRACTICES handed down from our Gurus’ times and kept intact by our forefathers against all the attacks by such MISCONSTRUED, LUDICROUS, FALSE, MISLEADING, anti-Gurmat and anti-Sikhi elements.
Conclusion
The second shabad also clearly shows that Gurbani SUPPORTS the concept of REINCARNATION.
Neither does Gurbani agree with their story that the death and rebirth reference in Gurbani are to death and rebirth of the soul in this life, not that of the physical body.
THINK ABOUT this SANGAT JI. Aren’t these Kala Afghana Brigade people a MISGUIDED LOT making stories to suit their agenda?
Don’t let these MOORAKHS FOOLS wreck the Sikhi TENETS and PRACTICES handed down from our Gurus’ times, and kept intact by our forefathers, against all the attacks by such MISCONSTRUED, LUDICROUS, FALSE, MISLEADING, anti-Gurmat and anti-Sikhi elements.
We will continue further in the next article.
Thank You.
