KEY SENTENCE
By the Grace of God, I will abide by the teachings of and keep the company of the God realised ones, I will meditate on NAAM and hence will overcome the 5 evils, acquire the 5 virtures and attain liberation MUKTI.

SUMMARY
This Shabad relates what is necessary and whose Grace and help is necessary to attain liberation in the age of Kal Yuga.

WHAT DO I KNOW? God is the greatest, unfathomable, unapproachable created the creation (4). With God’s Grace, I will meditate on NAAM will be liberated in this age Kal Yuga (1, Rahao).

WHAT SHOULD I DO? I must meditate on NAAM and abide by the teachings of and keep company of the God realised ones (2, 3, 4).

WHO WILL HELP ME? The God realised ones will help me and I will abide by and keep the company of them (3).

WHAT HAPPENS THEN? By meditating on NAAM my deeds and actions i.e. karma will be erased and I will not be subject to death and attain liberation MUKTI (2). Abiding by the teachings of and keeping the company (sangat) of the God realised ones (Saints, Saadh) will help me rid of my 5 evils and acqiure the 5 virtures (3, 4).

NOTES:
RELIGION OF THIS DARK AGE OF KAL YUGA ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ means the religion, i.e. the correct practices or actions related to faith, in this material world in this dark Age Kal Yuga. (1)

DARK AGE KAL OF YUGA ਕਲਿਜੁਗ means the present era Kal Yuga that is running where the 5 EVILS reign supreme and try to control everyone to become engrossed in the ILLUSORY material world MAYA. Being engrossed in MAYA we forget God which is the reality i.e. the TRUTH. (1)

MEDITATION .. IS THE BOAT ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਬੇੜੀ means NAAM is metaphorically reffered to as a boat, I should meditate on NAAM. (1)

MEDITATING ON THE LORD, THE SWIMMER SWIMS ACROSS ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਓ ਤਰੈ ਤਰਾਕੀ meams by meditating on NAAM I will get liberation, swimming being used metaphorically to represent meditating on NAAM. (1)

PROTECT AND PRESERVE THE HONOUR OF YOUR HUMBLE SERVANT ਲਾਜ ਰਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ means look after me so I don’t fall prey to the 5 evils and help in my goal (of attaining liberation). Rahao

ACCOUNT OF RECORDING ANGELS CHITR AND GUPT ਲੇਖਾ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਪਤਿ ਜੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ means the account of my deeds and actions. Chitr-Gupt are the mythological recording angels in Sanatan Faith. In Gurbani they are metaphorically used to denote the recording of my deeds and actions which are within the control of God. (2)

ACCOUNT WITH THE MESSENGER OF DEATH IS TOTALLY ERASED ਸਭ ਛੂਟੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਬਾਕੀ means that I will not be subject to death. The messenger of death ਜਮ is the mythological entitiy in Sanatan Faith who administers justice according to the deeds (karma). In Gurbani this is metaphorically used to denote the judgement of ones karma at death which is within the control of God. (2)

THE SAINTS OF THE LORD ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ / SAADH ਸਾਧ means the God realised souls.

THE PIERCING SUN OF DESIRES HAS SET ਦਿਨੀਅਰੁ ਸੂਰੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਨੀ means that I have overcome the 5 evils which control my desires to be engorssed in the material world MAYA. (3)

THE COOL MOON HAS RISEN means I have become virtuous (acquired the 5 virtures). (3)

MAKE HIM THE SLAVE OF THE SLAVE OF YOUR SLAVES ਕਰਿ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਦਸਾਕੀ means with the Grace of God I will abide by the teachings of and keep the company of the slave (God realised ones) of the slave (Guru) of God. Here the talk is about two levels of slaves of God. The first level next to God is the Guru and the next level are the God realised souls who are also the slaves of the Guru. Simply put I will abide by the teachings of and keep the company of the God ralised ones.

(The KEY sentence is a one sentence summary of the HUKAMNAMA. The SUMMARY summarises the meaning of the HUKUMANA. NOTE relates some concepts that help in understanding are based on the context of the Shabad.)

HUKAMNAMA
ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥ (SGGS 668 Dhanaashree M:4)
ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਭਾਈ ਕਿਵ ਛੂਟਹ ਹਮ ਛੁਟਕਾਕੀ ॥
Tell me, O Siblings of Destiny, the religion for this Dark Age of Kali Yuga. I seek emancipation – how can I be emancipated?

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਬੇੜੀ ਹਰਿ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਓ ਤਰੈ ਤਰਾਕੀ ॥੧॥
Meditation on the Lord, Har, Har, is the boat, the raft; meditating on the Lord, the swimmer swims across. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਲਾਜ ਰਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ॥
O Dear Lord, protect and preserve the honor of Your humble servant.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਨੁ ਜਪਾਵਹੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਹਮ ਮਾਗੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਇਕਾਕੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
O Lord, Har, Har, please make me chant the chant of Your Name; I beg only for Your devotional worship. ||Pause||

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਿਨ ਜਪਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਬਚਨਾਕੀ ॥
The Lord’s servants are very dear to the Lord; they chant the Word of the Lord’s Bani.

ਲੇਖਾ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਪਤਿ ਜੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸਭ ਛੂਟੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਬਾਕੀ ॥੨॥
The account of the recording angels, Chitr and Gupt, and the account with the Messenger of Death is totally erased. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਪਿਓ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਗਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ॥
The Saints of the Lord meditate on the Lord in their minds; they join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਦਿਨੀਅਰੁ ਸੂਰੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਨੀ ਸਿਵ ਚਰਿਓ ਚੰਦੁ ਚੰਦਾਕੀ ॥੩॥
The piercing sun of desires has set, and the cool moon has risen. ||3||

ਤੁਮ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖ ਵਡ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਤੁਮ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਅਪਾਕੀ ॥
You are the Greatest Being, absolutely unapproachable and unfathomable; You created the Universe from Your Own Being.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਜੈ ਕਰਿ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਦਸਾਕੀ ॥੪॥੬॥
O God, take pity on servant Nanak, and make him the slave of the slave of Your slaves. ||4||6||
